The Culmination

Well, we moved in November 9th and have been doing little projects and finishing up all of the loose ends. It took 4 weeks to get doorknobs on and the painting finished up. We've only had a window covering on the 8 foot living room window for 2 weeks.  We are still all sharing 1 shower because of problems with the other two. But for the most part, we are settled. I am learning to be patient for the rest of my wish list to happen.
I wasn't going to post anymore because I don't want to post pictures of my crappy furniture and those "secret messes", but I had one person tell me that " I don't feel like there is any closure after having watched the process. It seems like such an anti-climactic end".
So here it is. It is still not complete but you can get the general idea.

Well-there's the look at the progress to date. Maybe there will be an update-maybe not. Blogspot is not my friend right now, but maybe we can reconcile after we get more done. Merry Christmas!

Busy Busy Busy

We have been working every free minute to get this place ready to move into this weekend. Not everything will be done. This will be a never-ending project that keeps us busy throughout the winter. That's ok because our budget overruns have eaten our entertainment budget for the foreseeable future:)

The hardwood floors are done and they look AWESOME!

We now have another fully functioning bathroom. (we've been operating with just the one in the basement) The sinks will be operational in the other 2 bathrooms (now that the walls are patched and painted) as soon as Mark gets a minute to hook them up.

I spent the weekend saying not nice things about the guy we hired to put up the trim and moldings. In his rush to finish before the floor guy kicked him out for a few days, he slapped up the baseboards on the main floor. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but it made for quadruple the work because they interfered with the floor install (they were nicked by sander &  have stain on them)They went up un- painted. So all along the newly finished hardwood had to be taped off and nail holes filled and seams and top caulked and then painted. My other beef was that this "professional painter" didn't even think to mask off where I had already painted when he sprayed the board and batten and cubbies in the dining room so there was overspray all over. I very highly DON'T recommend anyone every using him. I have been finding proof of his shoddy workmanship all over. He has a few things to finish up but I am seriously considering paying more to have someone else do it.   I have liked all of the people we have used for this project with this one exception. If you are ever thinking of hiring someone for this kind of work, call me and make sure it's not this guy.

Cutting in paint is not the "funnest" job.

We had someone come and clean our ducts. We needed to get rid of all dirt and kitty residue. I was told by Mark that it was a good thing I was not there to see what came out because I would have "thrown up in my mouth" it was THAT gross. There was also some mold-probably from the previous owner running the humidifier at 45% for several years. So needless to say, my $69.95 duct cleaning coupon was moot:( But on the plus side- we will breathe so much better. I was getting headaches in there every day.

Mudded the risers on the stairs and sanded, taped and primed and will start painting tonight.

We found a new way to clean blinds. We loaded them up in the back of Ernie's truck (thanks for letting us borrow your ride) and drove them down to the do-it-yourself carwash. We used the floor mat clips to hold up the main rail and let the slats all the way out. The power spray and foam brush did an awesome job at getting off the crud.

Found lots of cool storage ideas at IKEA. Kyle liked it, don't let him tell you otherwise.

In between working during the day and working at the condo we are still trying to pack a few boxes and patch a few nail holes. Also, my sweet neighbor Gayle has allowed me to refinish furniture in her garage. Hopefully I get all of these projects completed before moving day so I don't have to add one more thing to my "to do " list.

We have lights!
My favorite is the ceiling fan that I refurbished with a can brushed nickel spray paint. It was white with nice brass do-dahs. After spraying the brass and adding a new light kit, I think it looks SO much better.

I need to find a good deal on door knobs. The ones I picked from the brochure are of course, the most expensive ones in the valley. So I need to start an online quest or we will be living with an open door policy.

We opted for floors upstairs instead of flooring for the basement, so that project is put on hold for a little while.

But all in all, we have had fun and will have the satisfaction of making this place our own with a lot of sweat equity. Anyone who needs a service project, community service, exercise or an excuse to get out of doing projects at their own house is welcome (and very appreciated) to help us move Friday evening or Saturday morning.

Good Bye and Good Riddance!

So long cheap Pergo!  We were going to try and live with it a while and re-do when we were swimming in cash................................
....................................but, we decided to rip it out and install the hardwood to match the rest of the house while the mess was made. Frankly, we will never be swimming in cash OR willing to make the mess again. So Mark pulled up the Pergo and found 2 layers of subfloor that needs to be removed. (I think we gained several inches of ceiling height by removing flooring)

It pushes our move in date back, but I think we will be so happy that we did it!
The blue tape is my vision for the board and batten trim in the dining room with a little "mud" area.

Progress report- tile is laid in the bathrooms and entry, wallpaper removed, recessed can lights in, staples and tack strip gone, and prep for paint starts this afternoon.

What's that smell???

After ripping out just about everything in the basement, we thought the smells would go with it.  There was a musty smell that wouldn't go away. There was some standing water in the drain of the furnace room. We had the drain cleaned. Still smelly.

There was some flooring in Kyle's room that I thought was the same cheap Pergo as the kitchen. Turns out it was wood look VINYL. After some investigating, we figured out that the water heater in the furnace room next door had leaked-gone thru the wall (moldy under the baseboards) and underneath the vinyl-faux wood.  When we started pulling it up, we found the source  of the smellies. What kind of diseases do you get from breathing in mold spores?????

Progress

Five dumpsters filled. Two more should do it.

Houston- We have a problem...

You know the show "Love it or List It?  Mark hates Hillary  because she always tells the homeowners that "We've found a problem...an expensive problem....and.....we can't do everything on your list".  That's what we are feeling this week.

We decided to re-tile the bathrooms upstairs because, like I've said before, the litterbox was optional for kitties, AND cat pee does seep thru tile and grout. So now the smell will really be gone. In pulling up the tile we found 2 layers of cement board and 2 sub floors. After that was gone, we found.....
Luckily plywood is not that expensive.

A Public Service Announcement

1. NEVER, NEVER, EVER.....PUT UP WALLPAPER UNLESS YOU ARE PLANNING TO MOVE BEFORE IT HAS TO  BE REMOVED.
2. NEVER BUY HOUSE WITH SAID WALLPAPER.

THAT IS ALL.

Making Progress

Wiring for ceiling lights. Thankful for good friends!
We thought we might leave the carpet pad until after the painting was done, but the stink was too much. The floors are in AWESOME shape! I am so excited. But there was tack strip and about a million three staples that need to go.
One down, one million and two to go.

Two Days In

We closed on Thursday
Got keys on Friday
by Saturday we had quite a bit of destruction.

Carpet, pad, the outer part of the wallpaper, closet, all the red shelving, storage room shelves, garden lattice, casings, and baseboards- all out.

Mark took out all of his frustrations on that closet.

A Place of Our Own

Four and a half years ago we decided to help out Grandma and move in to her home. Even though we were happy to be able to help, we have missed having a place of our own. We decided to take the plunge and purchased......a condo! We realized that Kyle won't always be around to be the lawn mower, gutter cleaner-outer, light puter-upper and fix it man.  So we decided we don't want to do that stuff anymore. We have been there- done that  and want to enjoy more of our weekend.

So.... we bought a 2800 sq. ft, 4 bedroom, 4 bath condo with great open space and (unfinished)hardwood floors under all the gross carpet.  It's dated, but with a lot of the expensive stuff recently re-done (windows, furnace, bath vanities).

We saw great potential and are busy making it our own. Here are some "before"
Granny fixtures and wallpaper- um, no
Using the litterbox was optional for the kitties.
Groovy paneling and red shag on the walls of the basement.
